Based on carbon content, there are three different types of Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Sheet, namely low, medium, and high carbon steel plates. Generally, the higher the carbon content, the greater the hardness, the higher the strength, but the lower the plasticity.
| Type of Carbon Steel Plates | Carbon Content | Tensile Strength | Yield Strength | Properties |
| Low/Mild Carbon Steel Plate | 0.05-0.25% | 325-500MPa | 180-260MPa | Low hardness; high ductility; low cost; good formability and weldability |
| Medium Carbon Steel Plate | 0.26-0.60% | 460-620MPa | 325-420MPa | Medium strength, ductility, and toughness; poor weldability |
| High Carbon Steel Plate | 0.61-1.50% | 660-940MPa | 380-440MPa | Greatest strength and hardness; low ductility and formability |

NM400 is a medium-grade wear-resistant steel that balances wear resistance and toughness. It resists material erosion and moderate impact abrasion, and boasts better machinability than NM450 and NM500. Suitable for all moderately worn vulnerable parts used in mining, engineering, cement, thermal power, metallurgy, port, environmental sanitation and other industries, its service life against wear is 3 to 5 times that of ordinary Q235 steel plates.

| Standard / Certification | Scope / Application |
| ISO 9001 Quality Management System | Covers the entire production chain – from raw material sourcing and melting to rolling, cutting, and final inspection – ensuring consistent product quality and full traceability. |
| CE Marking (European Safety Standards) | Validates that our steel sheets meet the essential safety and health requirements for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA), covering machinery safety and structural integrity. |
| IEC Electrical Standards | Applicable to steel components used in electrical enclosures, control cabinets, and conductive structural parts, ensuring compliance with international electrotechnical safety and performance criteria. |
| China GB National Machinery Standards | Full adherence to GB/T 700, GB/T 1591, GB/T 3274, GB/T 24186, GB 712, and other applicable Chinese mandatory and recommended standards for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional tolerances. |
These certifications are maintained through regular internal audits and third-party assessments, ensuring that every shipment meets the regulatory requirements of your destination market.
Selecting the right steel grade directly impacts your equipment's service life and total cost. Use our empirical guide below based on industry best practices:
| Your Working Condition | Recommended Grade | Key Reason |
| Structural frames, welded bridges, general fabrications | Q235B / SS400 / A36 / S235JR | Excellent weldability and formability; cost-effective for static and light dynamic loads. |
| Heavy-duty machinery frames, crane booms, high-strength structures | Q355B / S355JR / A572 Gr50 | Higher yield strength (≥355MPa) reduces material weight while improving load-bearing capacity. |
| Moderate wear applications – excavator buckets, dump truck liners | NM400 | Balances hardness and toughness; good machinability; longer service life than ordinary structural steel. |
| Severe sliding abrasion – crusher jaw plates, high-wear chutes | NM450 / NM500 | High surface hardness delivers extended wear life in high-abrasion environments. |
| Atmospheric corrosion resistance (outdoor bridges, port equipment) | SPA-H / Q355NH | Weathering steel with alloying elements that form a protective rust layer, reducing maintenance costs. |
| Shipbuilding & offshore platforms | AH36 / DH36 / EH36 | Certified marine grades with guaranteed low-temperature impact toughness. |
We manufacture according to GB/T 709 (Chinese standard) or ASTM A6/A568 (US standard) depending on the order. Tolerance ranges vary by nominal thickness – we ensure full compliance with the standard specified in your contract.
Q235B (Chinese GB standard) and SS400 (Japanese JIS standard) are both general-purpose structural steels with similar tensile strength (370-500MPa) and yield strength (≥235MPa for Q235B; ≥245MPa for SS400). In most structural applications—such as building frames, bridges, and general fabrications—they are largely interchangeable.
However, key differences to note:
Chemical composition: Q235B has slightly stricter limits on sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) content, offering marginally better weldability in certain conditions.
Impact toughness: Q235B specifies impact testing at 20°C, while SS400 does not require impact testing by default—critical for low-temperature environments.
Standard system: Q235B follows GB/T 700; SS400 follows JIS G3101. For projects requiring specific standard compliance, always confirm which standard your engineer specifies.
Our recommendation: For general use, either grade works. For low-temperature or high-weldability-demand projects, choose Q235B. For projects with Japanese-designed specifications, choose SS400.
The short answer: NM400 is a wear-resistant steel; Q235B is a structural steel—they serve completely different purposes.
| Comparison | NM400 | Q235B (Structural Steel) |
| Primary property | Abrasion resistance | Weldability & formability |
| Surface hardness | 360-420 HBW | ~120-140 HBW |
| Tensile strength | ≥1200 MPa | 370-500 MPa |
| Yield strength | ≥900 MPa | ≥235 MPa |
| Weldability | Requires preheating and special electrodes | Excellent, no special treatment needed |
| Best suited for | High-wear parts (liners, chutes, crusher jaws, bucket bottoms) | Load-bearing structures (frames, beams, bridges) |
| Service life in abrasive conditions | 3-5× longer than Q235B | Standard |
Key takeaway: Using NM400 for structural frames is overkill and difficult to weld. Using Q235B for high-wear liners will cause frequent downtime and replacement costs. Choose NM400 when abrasion is your primary challenge; choose Q235B when structural integrity and weldability are your priorities.
